Marketing might be the answer. As you know, news media often has ... "outrageous" news items that generate lots of, well, comments and page-views.
Welcome to the New News (different from the "New Math..")...
It all seems about selling something, and bloggers are the ones that often point out the truth of lack thereof in mainstream news articles and posts.

I think if you didn't want the publicity on their channel, you could have said (to the make-up staff), "You know, I like it simple and light-handed" instead of caving to what you felt would get your called back to Fox.
Yes, I know... That wouldn't be good ... marketing...
